Three Faces of Technological Determinism

Artist Statement

This piece is a play on Bruce Bimber’s paper “Karl Marx and the Three Faces of Technological Determinism” which elaborates Marx’s position on how productive technology influences human social relations. Living in a culture where technology is omnipresent and fast-changing, it is important to look around and see how it is altering our lives. Does a societies technology determine the development of its social structure and cultural values? As we lean more and more towards posting our lives online, how does that change our interactions with our peers, families and partners? We have become so embedded in our phones that the object itself becomes a part of us.
